SUMMARY

TPA Trail Crew partnered with the Conejos Peak Ranger District to complete trail maintenance on a broad range of area motorized single track trails. After meeting with Forest Service staff to identify priority work, the crew focused on several single track trails that had recently been used for a motorcycle race. The larger single track system had down trees and missing signage that required attention.

Work included removing numerous downed and hazardous trees, including several large overhead hazards, clearing debris and overgrown corridor, repairing tread, cleaning existing drains, and building new drainage features. Several user-created go-arounds were also rehabilitated to keep riders on the intended trail.

The crew completed maintenance on Alamosa Rock, Silver Mountain, South Rock, Lake Fork, Saddle Creek, Big Lake, Hot Creek, Willow Mountain, and Sawmill Gulch trails. Carsonite signs and width restrictors were repaired and updated with trail numbers, user-group information, reflective markings, and Forest Service and CPW stickers. The crew also replaced numerous signs that had fallen or been damaged by weather, livestock, or trail users.

The hitch covered a large portion of the Conejos Peak RD trail system, with the crew encountering many hikers and motorized users along the way and having several opportunities to educate users about responsible trail use.

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

The Conejos Peak Ranger District has a remote single track trail system and has a small staff with limited resources. The TPA trail crew is needed to perform annual OHV trail maintenance in this area. Our existing partnership with Conejos Peak RD is strong and we are committed to keeping these trails open.

GOALS FOR NEXT HITCH

Next hitch: 9/23-9/30 Gunnison Ranger District

Goals: The TPA crew will team up with the GOATs motorcycle club to perform trail work on Double Top Trail near Crested Butte. They will focus on the trail system around Double Top and have a Goats representative to show them areas needing trail work. The USFS will help by reserving a campsite for our crew, providing tools and two USFS employees will join the trail work party on 9/26. TPA, the Goats, CO500 and the USFS will partner up for the 9/26 work party to work on the Block and Tackle Trail. Growing the strong existing partnership with the Gunnison Goats motorcycle club and the US Forest Service is a priority for TPA. This area has some of the best single track in Colorado, so highly functional trail partnerships are critical to maintain access and keep the door open for new trail opportunities.
